I spent $200 on cozy sweaters at Target — here are the ones I’d buy again

Must read

Winter, spring, summer or fall, there’s one thing people close to me know — I never leave home without a sweater. All it takes is a slight chill in the air, or the AC set just one degree too cool, and I’m shivering. I own more sweaters than most people, but rest assured, I put them to good use.

Though I have an extensive collection, I’m always scoping out new pieces to replace the older ones. While recently shopping for household essentials at Target, some cozy new styles have been catching my eye. My family is always rushing me out of the store (probably for my own good), so I never have time to browse — but there’s always time for online shopping! Recently, I spent one quiet evening checking out the offerings on the Target website and couldn’t resist purchasing a few to see if they look as good in person as they do online.

Spoiler: Every Target sweater I tried was a winner. I didn’t mean to have a complete wardrobe upgrade in one go, but here we are! I especially loved this festive style that would work for a Christmas sweater party (it’s not ugly, FYI!) and this amazingly soft cashmere-like find in a lovely shade of green. And there were more — check out my top sweater picks for the season from Tar-jay below.

A New Day Women’s Holiday Crewneck Pullover Sweater

I thought this sweater would be itchy, but to my surprise it wasn’t. Score! (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

I hate the idea of dropping money on an “ugly” sweater that I’ll only wear once. That said, I like to get in the holiday spirit as much as the next person, so I’m planning to wear this pretty pink number to my family’s festive gathering. The red bow gives Christmas vibes, but it’s not so overt that I won’t be able to wear this sweater in January or February.

Target

If pink and red feel a bit too feminine for you, you’re in luck. This sweater is available in a variety of cute color combos — 13 to be exact — all with festive details that will make you feel cheery.

Target shoppers give this style 4.5 out of 5 stars. “Very cozy, good quality knit” one customer commented. “I love the fit, feel and look of this sweater,” another added.

I love the look of Fair isle sweaters, but I never found one that suited me — until I tried on this Target style. The muted black, white and tan palette is right up my alley and this sweater has a great weight to it. I also appreciated that it was long enough to cover my entire tummy and even some of my tush. I’d pair this top with jeans or with my favorite black leggings and winter boots for an apres ski look.

Important fit note: This sweater has a boxier fit which I really like, but I understand isn’t for everyone. I went with the cream combo, but it’s also available in light blue and grey up to size XXL. One person who purchased this pick called it “a great sweater” and I couldn’t agree more.

Universal Thread Women’s Crewneck Cashmere-Like Cable Pullover Sweater

A sweater that’s as soft and warm as cashmere for just $25? Yes, please. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

Do I own my fair share of cashmere sweaters? Yes. Was I seriously impressed by the feel of this “cashmere-like” sweater from Target? Also yes! It’s definitely not “just like the real thing,” but if you’re looking for a luxuriously soft sweater that’s not too heavy or bulky, try this one. The cropped style is a little shorter than I’d prefer but still offers plenty of coverage.

Target

It’s not at all surprising to me that some colors of this sweater are already sold out. I really wanted to go back for the rich burgundy shade, but sadly it’s gone in every size. That said, blue, grey, cream and green are all still available in several sizes, so try this luxe-feeling pullover for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

Full disclosure: I’ve never met a striped sweater I didn’t love. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

When people ask me what my favorite color is, I usually say stripes. I own so many striped sweaters and tops that I’ve lost count at this point. Needless to say, when I saw this style at Target, buying it was a no-brainer. Unsurprisingly, it’s also my absolute favorite of all the tops I tried for this haul. It looks just like the J.Crew and Boden sweaters I’ve paid so much more for, and the feel is amazing.

Target

I’m still kicking myself for only buying one of these sweaters. Why? Because it’s so good, and now a bunch of colors are sold out. If you happen to see your size in stock, buy it! Like me, tons of Target shoppers are obsessed. “Love this soft, cozy sweater,” said one fan. “I have three colors now.” Another added, “[This is] one of the softest sweaters I own!”

Universal Thread Women’s Cozy Knit Button-Down Cardigan

You could style this cardi with a shirt or dress underneath, but I really like it as a top on its own. (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

Recently, I’ve loved styling cardigans as proper sweaters, wearing them all buttoned up without a shirt underneath. And the buttons on this one are just too good not to show off. Like so many of the other Target styles I tried, I was wary about the itch factor with this sweater, but it’s unbelievably soft. I wore it without a layer underneath and my skin wasn’t irritated at all. Huge win.

Target

“You need this sweater!” one person wrote in their review of this sweater. “It is so soft and can be dressed up or down. Love it!” I concur, as do more than 100 other shoppers who gave this pick a perfect five out of five-star rating. I couldn’t resist the pink hue, but it’s also available in black, green, camel, gray and cream.

A New Day Women’s Coatigan

A New Day Women's Coatigan

Is it a coat? It is a cardigan? Oh wait, it’s both! (Jeanine Edwards/Yahoo)

This chevron patterned coatigan just screamed “old money” to me so, obviously, I bought it. Picture it over leggings for an elevated look to your daily athleisurewear. Or wear it with jeans on a mild day to run errands. There’s just something so effortlessly chic about it. And yes, it really does look just as expensive in person as it does on the model online.

Target

If you live in a place that doesn’t get super cold, this could totally work as outerwear. Here in the Northeast, however, it’s not nearly heavy enough for frigid winter days. But for lounging around the house or layering under a coat? It’s perfect.

A New Day Women’s Fuzzy Party Cardigan

I could not stop running my hands over this sweater — that’s how amazing it feels. (Jeanine Edwards)

Okay, I don’t love how cropped this cardigan is, but the faux fur material? Heavenly! A dream! I cannot rave about the feel of it enough. The gold buttons give it a little bit of glam; paired with the muted maroon, it has such a rich aesthetic. Target really knocked it out of the park with this one — no notes.

Target

Am I surprised that this sweater is sold out in a bunch of sizes already? Nope. It’s a total steal at just $35 because it looks off-the-charts luxe. “This sweater is so soft, and perfect dressed up or down. I receive so many compliments when I wear it! No one can believe it’s from Target,” one customer commented.
