I downloaded Google's Gemini app on the iPhone for free – and it nearly replaces Siri for me

Google’s Gemini app is now available to download on the iPhone App Store — after being spotted in regions like the Philippines a few days ago.

Previously exclusive to Android devices, the dedicated app for the search giant’s artificial intelligence assistant allows users to type in prompts, leverage its multimodal capabilities, and even converse with Gemini Live for more natural exchanges. Notably, the Gemini app is a more streamlined way for iOS users to dial into Google’s AI chatbot, which previously required opening the more generalized Google Search app to access.

You can download the Gemini app for free by searching for it in the App Store, and the only requirement to use the AI features is a Google account. I’ve been testing the app for the past hour, and it’s nearly identical in function and user interface to its Android counterpart, which is great to see. In fact, if you’re on a Gemini Advanced plan, which gives you access to a more capable Gemini 1.5 Pro model and other cross-platform integrations, that, too, will function the same on the iOS app.

Unlike the current version of Siri (even if you’re on iOS 18), Google’s Gemini AI is noticeably more capable, with the ability to help you identify objects in images, play music on YouTube, and even fire up a Google Doc at your command.

I must say, telling a voice assistant on an iPhone to start a Google Maps navigation feels like the most rebellious thing, but it’s working great on my iPhone 16 Pro, and many users will likely appreciate these expanded capabilities just as much.

The downside of using Gemini on the iPhone is that it can’t adjust or modify on-device settings and apps, like helping you set alarms or switch to different focus modes. (You can still use Siri for those, to be clear.)

Ultimately, the Google voice assistant’s dedicated app makes it easier for iPhone users to access it right from their home screens and, if they’re feeling adventurous, via the Action button. If the buy-in from consumers is there, it’s a major win for Google.
