A Korean shipbuilder has launched new technology which it said will ensure safety for ammonia-fueled vessels.
Ahead of the Posidonia shipping conference in Athens, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) held an event in the Greek capital to launch its tools that promise to increase ammonia efficiency and stop leakages as quickly as possible. HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore is a mid-tier part of the HD Hyundai company. Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and others (including, intriguingly, Ulsan Football Club) sit within the KSOE management structure.
HD Korea revealed its proprietary integrated scrubber technology at the event, designed to reduce all emissions from ammonia drive trains to “nearly zero”.
Leakage and efficiency losses were identified by shipping firms, according to HD. Along with its new ammonia scrubber, the firm said it had developed a ship management AI and remote drone technology to aid accident prevention.
“When applying these systems to ammonia-powered ships even fine leakages can be detected in real time,” HD Korea explained.
“HD Hyundai has proprietary technologies and the most experience in the world when it comes to building gas carriers. With our abundant experience in green technologies, we plan to be the frontrunner of the future shipbuilding market,” said Seung-yong Park, president & COO of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, part of KSOE.
