Senator Tony Hwang (R-28th), Republican Senate leader on the Transportation Committee, celebrated the latest round of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) grants awarded to Connecticut with Governor Lamont and CT Department of Transportation Commissioner Eucalitto. The funding builds on a series of transformative infrastructure projects made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) passed in 2021, aimed at improving rail safety, enhancing connectivity, and driving economic growth.

“This funding is another step toward modernizing Connecticut’s transportation infrastructure and strengthening our economy,” said Senator Hwang. “From the $1.4 billion in 2022 which included the Walk Bridge replacement in Norwalk to the 2023 $291 million grant that included the Devon Bridge project in Milford/Stratford, and now today’s grants, we’re witnessing how federal and state collaboration is delivering real progress. These investments will reduce commuter delays, improve safety, and promote environmental sustainability, benefiting families and businesses across Connecticut.”

Governor Lamont said in a statement, “The Hartford Line is not only providing a valuable and convenient public transit resource for people who live in central Connecticut, but it is also helping create new opportunities for economic growth and development in the towns it serves. Expanding service on this line will further make travel on this rail line even more convenient, and I appreciate President Biden and the FRA for partnering with our state to make this happen.”

Today’s newly announced FRA funding includes:
•$11.61 million – CTRail Hartford Line Expansion and Enhancement
•$2.4 million – Danbury Branch Grade Crossing Engagement, Planning, and Consolidation
•$2 million – The City Link Project in New Haven
•$2 million – Study to remove barriers and reconnect neighborhoods across I-91 in New Haven
•$400,000 – Toelles Road Grade Crossing Elimination

“These projects aren’t just about fixing infrastructure—they’re about economic development, job creation, and environmental stewardship,” said Sen. Hwang. “Upgrading our rail system will reduce carbon emissions, ease congestion, and provide more reliable transportation options for residents. This kind of smart, forward-thinking investment is key to building a more resilient and sustainable future.”

Senator Hwang emphasized the importance of long-term infrastructure planning and the need to continue working across party lines to secure federal resources for the state.

“Our transportation system is the backbone of Connecticut’s economy. These grants, along with previous funding for the Walk and Devon Bridges, reflect our commitment to investing in critical infrastructure that supports economic vitality, protects the environment, and enhances quality of life for residents. I look forward to seeing these projects become reality and the lasting benefits they will bring to our communities.”
