In 2025, Horry-Georgetown Technical College will begin construction on a new Marine Center on Georgetown’s campus.
Southeast Crescent Regional Commission awarded the college with a grant to purchase new and advanced equipment for their outboard marine program and new boat building program.
Using the new equipment, students will be able to cut out and make any part of a boat using a computer numerical control machine.

The Georgetown campus of HGTC will be the only technical college in the state that offers both of these programs, according to Dean of Academic Affairs Brandon Haselden.
“Boating and fishing makes up a $6.5 billion economic impact to our state. So, we’re talking about a major industry and a major economic impact in what we do and in and out are our communities,” he said. “Basically, everything that the students are going to be covering is going to be related back to real world knowledge that they’re going to be able to apply in the manufacturing setting.”
In addition to using advanced technology in the classroom, Haselden said these classes will put them on top in a growing industry outside of the classroom.
According to Haselden, the new tools of various console materials, including fiberglass, will prepare them for their capstone project at the end of the semester making their own boat.
“Whenever you start talking about the manufacturing of the boat, there’s a lot of other areas. Plumbing, electrical, a lot of scenarios where most people would think that that wouldn’t be critical,” he said. “But there’s a lot of electrical skills that’s involved. How to run wires, basically safety guidelines with few lines and electricity and water and so forth. So, all of those skill sets too will be covered in this program.”

The History of Boat Building in America
Boat building in America has roots that stretch back centuries. Early Indigenous peoples crafted vessels from wood, bark, and reeds. These were essential for fishing and transportation.
With European colonization came new techniques and materials. The 18th century saw the rise of shipbuilding as a vital industry, especially in coastal towns.
By the 19th century, wooden boats dominated both commercial and recreational activities. Shipyards buzzed with skilled craftsmen who perfected their trade.
The invention of steam power transformed boat design dramatically. This innovation paved the way for larger ships capable of traversing vast oceans.
As time passed, fiberglass emerged as a popular material in the mid-20th century. It revolutionized recreational boating by making it more accessible to everyday enthusiasts.
Today’s boat builders draw inspiration from this rich history while embracing modern practices that ensure functionality and aesthetics blend seamlessly.
Current Trends and Challenges in the Industry
The boat building industry is undergoing a transformation. Demand for recreational boats is rising, fueled by a growing interest in outdoor activities. This surge brings both opportunities and challenges.
One challenge is the shortage of skilled labor. Many experienced craftsmen are retiring without enough newcomers to take their place. As a result, companies must invest in training programs to bridge this gap.
On another front, consumer preferences are shifting rapidly. Today’s buyers seek more than just functionality; they want unique designs and personalized features that reflect their lifestyle.
Market pressures also force manufacturers to keep costs down while maintaining quality standards. Adapting quickly to these changing dynamics can be daunting but essential for survival.
Finally, navigating regulations around safety and environmental impact adds complexity to the process. Companies at the Marine Center face these issues head-on as they strive for innovation amid evolving demands.
Technological Advancements in Boat Building
Boat building is undergoing a remarkable transformation thanks to cutting-edge technologies. Advanced computer-aided design (CAD) software allows builders to create intricate blueprints with precision. This innovation streamlines the construction process and minimizes material waste.
3D printing is another game-changer in the industry. Manufacturers can produce complex components quickly, reducing lead times significantly. This technology opens doors for customization, enabling boaters to personalize their vessels like never before.
Moreover, automation in production has increased efficiency and safety on the shop floor. Robots assist in repetitive tasks, freeing skilled artisans to focus on creative aspects of boat design.
The integration of smart technologies also enhances user experience on watercraft. From navigation systems that improve safety to energy-efficient engines that reduce fuel consumption, these advancements are setting new standards for performance and sustainability in boating experiences.
