Smartphone maker Honor unveiled two industry-leading on-device AI innovations at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2024. At its keynote presentation during MWC Shanghai 2024, titled “The Human-AI Synergy: Intelligent Devices Will Empower People Better,” the company emphasised its commitment to human-centred on-device AI. They also highlighted their recent progress in human-centric AI, AI Deepfake Detection, and AI Defocus Eye Protection technologies.
Honor’s New AI Innovations
Honor launched AI-powered Deepfake Detection technology to address the threats posed by cloud-based “deepfake” AI technology. This technology identifies digitally altered videos and images created or modified using AI or synthetic methods. AI Deepfake Detection analyses frame-by-frame attributes such as image clarity, eye contact, lighting, and video playback to detect imperceptible anomalies.
Moreover, the company stated that AI Deepfake Detection has been trained using a comprehensive dataset of images and videos associated with online fraud, enabling the AI to rapidly screen, identify, and compare content within three seconds. Upon detecting any synthetic or altered content, the AI promptly issues a risk alert to the user.

Additionally, highlighting the global rise in myopia cases attributed to prolonged screen usage, the smartphone manufacturer introduced AI Defocus Eye Protection. This innovation utilises artificial intelligence to mitigate the risk of near-sightedness by emulating defocus glasses on the smart device’s screen. Defocus glasses introduce controlled defocus in the peripheral visual field, slowing down the elongation of the eye and supporting clear central vision maintenance.

According to the company, Honor’s AI Defocus Eye Protection feature has demonstrated an average decrease of 13 degrees in users’ transient myopia after 25 minutes of reading, with some individuals experiencing reductions of up to 75 degrees.
