Huskies place second as Breon shoots career-best 78

LEWISTOWN — In their first home match of the golf season, Mifflin County made sure to take advantage of playing at Lewistown Country Club on Monday afternoon.

The Huskies soared to claim second place in the Mid-Penn match, one shot behind first-place Mechanicsburg.

Leading the Huskies was Evan Breon, who recorded a career-best score of 78. The all-star performance was also good enough for first place overall in the match.

“I feel I played the best I could today and I mentally grinded. I don’t think I could have left anything out there like I did today. I left it all out there,” Breon said. “This is the best match I’ve ever had and I’m amazed at how I played today. It’s crazy that I won the match as well.”

Breon’s play certainly created plenty of positive buzz around the course.

“I’m proud of the kid. He’s been up here everyday this summer, putting in that hard work and finally showing off. So, I’m really proud of him. He played well today and I’m just glad he finally showed what he can do,” Husky golfer Colby Seiler said.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Evan for shooting that score today. That’s incredible,” Huskies coach Aaron Bubb added.

Seiler and Jackson Flood both launched an 81, which was good for a fourth-place tie overall. Jace Rishel added an 89, which was good for 19th place overall.

“Our team total of 329 today was the best score of our season, and the best team score we have had in my 12 years of coaching,” Bubb noted.

The Huskies have prepared themselves for strong days like Monday. Bubb explained his team’s practice habits.

“We do a lot of playing nine holes… We start from 100 yards. They drop a ball at the 100-yard mark and they have to shoot 36 or better on nine holes from 100 yards in twice. Then, when they do that I move them back to 150 (yards) twice and they go back to 200 twice until they ultimately can get all the way back to the tees. Working that short game is critical because that’s where you score, around the greens,” Bubb said.

The Huskies went 5-1 on the day, and now stands at 16-8 overall and 16-8 in the Mid-Penn Keystone Division. MC plays at home again on Thursday when they host East Juniata, Newport, and Millersburg.

After coming close to first place in the Mid-Penn match, the second-place finish adds fuel to the Huskies’ play moving forward.

“I’m so excited now to play Thursday and see how it goes. It’s really exciting,” Flood said.

The Husky girls golf team also competed at Lewistown Country Club. Emma Norman shot a personal best 115, which was good for seventh overall, and Lily Breon shot a 122 which was good for 11th place overall.

The MC girls team hits the course next Wednesday at Mayapple golf course in Carlisle.
