HINTON RECEIVES $5.9 MILLION IN GRANT FUNDING FOR KEY INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
The Town of Hinton is pleased to announce that it has received a total of $5.9 million in grant funding for two critical infrastructure projects. This funding, comprising two separate grants, will support essential improvements in transportation and water treatment systems.
Switzer Drive Asphalt Rehabilitation Project
A grant of $913,843 has been awarded from the Provincial Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program for the Switzer Drive Asphalt Rehabilitation project. As approved in the 2024 Capital Budget, this funding covers approximately 30% of the project’s total costs.
Switzer Drive is a vital arterial roadway connecting Hinton’s Hill and Valley districts. Its rehabilitation is essential for maintaining a smooth and reliable connection for residents, businesses, and significant industrial traffic. The completed project will enhance the roadway’s durability, ensuring continued support for the town’s economic vitality and growth.
Upstream Water Treatment Infrastructure Enhancement
Hinton will also receive $4,990,000 from the Alberta Municipal Water/Wastewater Partnership Program. This grant will fund approximately 80% of the town’s costs for upgrading the upstream water treatment infrastructure. The project includes the installation of a new stave line, a clarifier gearbox, and backup power generation to the Water Treatment Plant.
Replacement of the Stave Line is vital as the existing wooden line was built in the 1950’s and carries all the Town’s water to the Water Treatment Plant. The backup power generation is important so that water service can be maintained in the Town, should there be problems in the power grid such as during last years wild fire threat.
Securing this grant was crucial in advancing Hinton’s water treatment capabilities and facilitated a beneficial agreement with Mondi Hinton, the new owner of the local pulp mill. This partnership underscores Hinton’s commitment to enhancing its water and wastewater management systems, ensuring sustainable and efficient operations for the community.
