For under a year during its release in 2021, the pop culture landscape was practically inundated by the haunting chant of ‘mugunghwa kkochi pieotseubnida‘, all thanks to the explosive, unprecedented success of Netflix’s well-received Korean series, Squid Game. With season 2 now streaming on Netflix, Google has taken it upon itself to commemorate the occasion with an interactive mini-game you can play for free.
Receiving equal acclaim upon its release on Boxing Day, the seven-episode arc that comprised the show’s second season brings fans back to the infamous battle royale arena with series protagonist Seong Gi-hun, who after nabbing the top prize of 45.6 billion won (MYR 1.3 billion) from the 33rd iteration of the namesake games, set out on a path of vengeance to avenge his deceased friends and bring its creators to justice.
How to play the free Squid Game season 2 mini-game on Google
Beyond returning cast members who include the likes of Lee Jung-jae, Wi Ha-joon, Gong Yoo, and Lee Byung-hun who reprise their roles respectively, this latest iteration of the beloved series also introduces a slew of new characters. This includes Park Sung-hoon, who plays the transgender former special forces soldier Hyun-Ju, T.O.P as rapper Thanos who lost his fortune in a crypto scam, and Kang Ha-neul as former marine Dae-Ho, among others.
While you can play a full-blown multiplayer videogame based on the hit franchise, Google will allow you to partake in some of the excitement without even leaving your browser screen in just a few simple clicks. In order to reveal it, all you have to do is type ‘Squid Game’ into the Google search box and keep an eye out for the bottom-most edge of your window.
You should eventually see the recruiter’s signature brown invitation to the aforementioned games appear. Upon clicking it, users will be taken to a brief minigame that emulates the show’s infamous ‘Red Light, Green Light’ stage, where you take control of six players and aid them in crossing over the finish line.
Mercifully instead of being lethally terminated, players who lose the mini-game simply walk off the screen. Upon succeeding in taking the group across the finish line, you will be rewarded with a shower of confetti over your screen. How adorably apt!
All seven episodes of Squid Game season 2 can now be screened on Netflix. The show’s third and final season is expected to air later in 2025.
