TRI-STATE (WFIE) – A global technology outage caused several issues for banks, airlines, media outlets and multiple businesses early Friday morning.

We’re told that all started after cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike experienced a tech malfunction.

That outage did not only hit our 14 News station, but a few other local businesses as well.

Beth Oates with Fifth Third Bank says their employees were unable to log into their computers.

Oates also confirmed minimal issues are affecting Fifth Third customers and their branch network.

She says the bank is working to fix the issue, and their digital and self-service channels are operational.

Several airports were also affected by the outage.

Some travelers reported being stuck where they are, and that many things such as check-in and boarding had to be done with pen and paper.

At this time, it seems most of the flights out and in to the Evansville Regional Airport are back to normal.

EVV released a statement about the outage saying:

“A global technical issue has impacted some scheduled arrival and departure times across the globe. As always, we encourage travelers to contact their respective airlines to check on flight status. The airport remains open and fully operational, and several of flights have already and/or are scheduled to depart this morning.”

Mesker Park Zoo and Botanical Garden took to social media to let visitors know they are currently only accepting cash.

In the Facebook post, zoo officials confirmed that is due to the widespread outage, and their on-site ATM is working if visitors need it.

We’ve also been told Owensboro Health, Evansville/Vanderburgh Central Dispatch and the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office are not experiencing any issues from the outage.

Officials with Deaconess Hospital say they have not had any major issues, and report patient care was never affected.

CrowdStrike has confirmed they believe the issue is not a security incident or cyberattack.

This is a developing story.
