Riverside Stem Academy has been named California’s best high school, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 rankings.

The publication analyzed about 25,000 public high schools — ultimately ranking nearly 17,660 — across the U.S. for this year’s annual rankings.

High schools were assessed on college readiness, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth, and graduation rate.

High schools are given a national rank, unlike the publication’s elementary and middle school rankings.

“These are paired with district and state-level statistics for comparative purposes, information about each school’s student body and enrollment, Title I status, and other distinguishing characteristics,” the report said.

Top California middle and elementary schools

Schools in Cupertino and Cerritos were ranked No. 1 on U.S. News & World Report’s new lists for best elementary and middle schools in California.

The news media company based its findings on test scores for math and reading. The rankings also involved evaluating the scores in terms of socioeconomic demographics.

Throughout the state, 43% of students tested at or above the proficient level of reading, according to U.S. News & World Report. The percentage was lower for math at 33%. The top 10 schools on each list had a higher percentage, typically 90% or higher.

The schools had a ratio of about 25 students to every teacher. Some were charter or magnet schools.

The top 10 schools on both lists were of all sizes, from a couple hundred or so students to more than a thousand. They’re in cities of all sizes throughout the state.

Bullis Charter School in Los Altos and North Star Academy in Redwood City, which serves elementary and middle school grades, made the top 10 on both lists.
