Human trafficking in Los Angeles has drawn renewed attention after Google images revealed signs on federal railroad property bearing messages like “HELP,” “LAPD,” “FBI,” and “TRÁFICO.” These signs, constructed from pipes, underscore the crisis gripping parts of the city.

South Figueroa Street, which authorities have designated as the core of human trafficking, is the focus of their operations. A 2024 report described concerted efforts by federal agencies, Los Angeles municipal and county officials, and others to stop criminal activities along a three-and-a-half-mile section of South Figueroa Street. Victims as young as 11 years old have been discovered in the targeted area, which stretches from Gage Avenue to the 110 Freeway.

“Every night, a human rights tragedy is revealed in this corridor,” said U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada. Children from foster care and group homes are among the vulnerable people who traffickers prey on, he continued. Victims are forced into sex work after being groomed.

Officials Describe Shocking Conditions

L.A. City Attorney Hydee Feinstein Soto released concerning findings from a ride-along with police officers during a news conference in downtown Los Angeles. She talked of knowing about places specifically utilized for child exploitation and witnessing young girls in different phases of undressing.

Feinstein Soto said, “There is a ‘kiddie stroll,’ specifically for minors.”

The Department of Justice, the LAPD, the FBI, and the city attorney’s office are all working together to coordinate the response. In order to rescue victims and bring criminals to justice, officials try to pool resources.

Disturbing Case Details Highlight Traffickers’ Methods

George Gascón, the district attorney for L.A. County, talked about a recent case in which a trafficker branded many victims with his name on their faces. The case highlights the cruel methods traffickers employ to subjugate their victims. An update on the rescue operations along the Figueroa corridor was given by interim LAPD Chief Dominic Choi. Authorities have rescued 84 victims—including children—from human trafficking this year alone.
