Here’s where those federal dollars are going.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids is set to receive nearly $26 million in federal transportation grants, marking a significant step forward in the city’s efforts to improve connectivity and safety across its neighborhoods.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the city two major grants through its RAISE and Reconnecting Communities Pilot programs (RCP).

The larger grant, totaling $25 million, will fund a complete overhaul of the East Beltline Bridge. The project includes adding dedicated bicycle lanes, ADA-compliant sidewalks and improved vehicle lanes. Leaders hope to make the corridor more accessible for all residents regardless of their mode of transportation.

An $800,000 grant will also support a comprehensive study of the US-131 freeway corridor.

The study aims to identify opportunities to enhance east-west connections beneath the freeway, focusing particularly on pedestrian and cyclist accessibility.

The projects align with broader federal initiatives to rebuild infrastructure while prioritizing sustainability and connection between communities.

Construction timelines will be announced as the projects move forward through the planning phase. To learn more on the grants, visit the U.S. Department of Transportation’s website on RAISE funding here and the RCP website here.
