Governor Tim Walz has unveiled an $887 million bonding bill proposal to fund a wide range of infrastructure projects across Minnesota. The plan emphasizes improving public safety, addressing environmental concerns, and enhancing state facilities.
Key components of the proposal include:
• $10 million to support Blue Earth County’s efforts to remove the Rapidan Dam and replace the County Road 9 bridge, following its collapse last summer.
• $239 million for public safety, including expanding the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and constructing a Minnesota State Patrol headquarters.
• Over $200 million for repairs and renovations on Minnesota State and University of Minnesota campuses.
• More than $144 million for water and transportation infrastructure, including clean water projects and flood mitigation.
• $44 million for housing and environmental improvements, including $7 million for public housing rehabilitation and $17 million for updates to the Minneapolis Veterans Home.
Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan described the plan as a continuation of last session’s efforts, saying, “We’re benefiting our communities, protecting our children and families, and ensuring a prosperous future for generations to come.”
The plan faces challenges as House Democrats and Republicans remain locked in a power-sharing dispute, with lawsuits alleging a lack of quorum in House proceedings. Gov. Walz, however, dismissed the concerns as “just noise” and expressed confidence in moving the bill forward.
