Colorado Governor Jared Polis recently delivered his localized State of the State Address in Colorado Springs, emphasizing the state’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure and economic growth. Addressing local leaders, Polis outlined his administration’s focus on affordable housing, transit expansion, clean air initiatives, workforce development, and public safety—all aimed at fostering a prosperous and environmentally responsible future for the state.
Building Affordable Housing and Expanding Transit
In his address, Governor Polis underscored the importance of increasing the supply of affordable housing near jobs and transit hubs. “Colorado needs to lead the way in building more housing that Coloradans and families can afford, expand transit options to protect our clean air, and make our communities and neighborhoods safer,” said Polis. He also reiterated a call for innovative reforms to empower builders, including policies that encourage modular housing and enable houses of worship to use their land to address housing shortages.
This focus on housing aligns with Polis’ broader vision of sustainability, aiming to reduce urban sprawl and improve transit access. Investments in convenient transit systems are expected to save residents time and money while also contributing to cleaner air and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Investing in Workforce Development
Governor Polis highlighted efforts to strengthen Colorado’s workforce by connecting residents with educational and vocational opportunities. “Connecting Coloradans with opportunities to gain credentials and develop skills with a paid apprenticeship will strengthen our workforce and economy,” Polis noted.
These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to create accessible, low-cost pathways to good-paying jobs, making Colorado a model for workforce readiness. By leveraging programs like AmeriCorps, the state aims to enhance economic mobility while supporting industries critical to sustainable development.
Modernizing Education and Training Facilities
Governor Polis also toured Pueblo Community College’s upgraded welding labs, which have become a vital resource for training Colorado’s workforce. Renovated in 2020 with funding from SB17-267, Sustainability of Rural Colorado, the 6,000-square-foot facility now includes ten new welding stations, enhanced safety features, and space for large-scale fabrication equipment. These state-of-the-art facilities are helping residents gain skills for in-demand welding jobs, furthering Colorado’s economic and industrial sustainability.
“Strengthening our workforce and helping more Coloradans build needed skills that lead to good-paying jobs is good for our communities and our economy,” Polis stated, commending Pueblo Community College for its contributions.
A Vision for Colorado’s Future
Governor Polis’ localized address builds on the themes of his seventh State of the State Address, where he outlined a vision for a future driven by innovation, equity, and sustainability. By prioritizing affordable housing, transit expansion, workforce development, and clean air initiatives, the governor aims to position Colorado as a national leader in sustainable infrastructure.
“Over the past year, we have been laser-focused on saving people money and lowering the cost of living, and there’s a lot more we need to do,” said Polis. “I look forward to the work ahead to build on our successes, keep Colorado’s economy and workforce strong, and make Colorado a model of personal and economic freedom for the nation.”
