Must read

Google has announced the completion of its latest data centre and cloud region campus expansion in Singapore. This increases the company’s total investments in technical infrastructure in the country to US$5 billion (SG$6.7 billion), an increase from US$850 million (SG$1.1 billion) in 2018.

A statement made by Google reports that the completed data centres respond to growing demand for cloud services locally and around the world, serving to bolster Singapore’s position as a data center hub for the region.

In partnership with these services is the Singaporean government, where organisations such as Ministry of Communications and Information, Digital Industry Singapore, Smart Nation Group and Enterprise Singapore have announced various joint initiatives to accelerate AI adoption across government and industry.

Singapore is one of the 11 countries where Google has built and currently operates data centres, and is amongst 40 regions with an operating cloud region.

Google also reports its priority to equip data centres with industry-leading sustainable futures, ensuring efficient resource management to power its demanding applications. In view of Singapore being a tropical climate, this includes carefully regulated and engineered cooling measures, such as re-using recycled water for cooling multiple times.

“The expansion of our data center campus in Singapore reaffirms our commitment to helping Southeast Asian organisations capitalise on digital opportunities, while ensuring that growth is as sustainable as possible,” said Kate Brandt, chief sustainability officer, Google.

In tandem with Google’s continual expansion of tech infrastructure is its reported investment of US$2 billion in Malaysia to accelerate digital transformation in the country.  This includes the development of Malaysia’s first Google data centre and Google Cloud region to meet the growing demand for cloud services locally and around the world.

The Google data centre will power Google’s popular digital services, such as Search, Maps, and Workspace. In a statement made at the time, Google says it will also play an essential role in enabling Google to deliver the benefits of Al to users and customers across the country.
