Google has announced a major upgrade to its AI-powered research and writing assistant, NotebookLM. This upgraded version, utilizing Google AI’s latest Gemini 1.5 Pro technology, is now accessible in over 200 countries and territories.

NotebookLM, developed by Google Labs, is designed to assist users in navigating complex information and generating insights. The tool aims to offer a comprehensive and user-friendly research and writing experience through advanced AI technology.

“With Gemini 1.5 Pro’s capabilities, NotebookLM empowers users to unlock insights and make connections across a vast range of documents,” said Steven Johnson, editorial director at Google Labs.

NotebookLM’s enhancements focus on improving its ability to handle complex information. Key upgrades include:

  • Expanded Source Compatibility: NotebookLM now supports a wider array of source materials, such as Google Slides files and website URLs, in addition to the previously supported Google Docs, PDFs, and text files.
  • Enhanced Fact-Checking: Users can now benefit from inline citations that directly link to supporting text within their uploaded sources, simplifying the verification of AI-generated responses.
  • Streamlined Information Access: The new Notebook Guide feature converts uploaded materials into user-friendly formats like FAQs, briefing documents, or study guides.
  • Multimodal Understanding: With Gemini 1.5 Pro’s capabilities, NotebookLM can reference and answer questions about images, charts, and diagrams within Google Slides and Docs, automatically including relevant image citations.

New users can start by creating a notebook and uploading documents relevant to their projects. They can then utilize NotebookLM to read, take notes, ask questions, and organize ideas. Google said uploaded source materials are never used to train the model, ensuring user privacy.
