In a survey that surfaces from time to time, Google TV asks what you think of its homescreen ads, and if there are too many.
The Google TV homescreen is packed full of content. Most of it is under the guise of personalized or curated recommendations, typically including popular movies on Google Search, shows or movies that align with your interests, and more. There’s also a rotating slider at the top of the screen that shows content that’s either recommended or “Sponsored.”
Google is asking for user feedback on the homescreen, though, with a survey that appears for Google TV users and asks about their thoughts on the number of ads on the homescreen. This survey shows up at random and has appeared off and on for a while now, recently getting some attention when a Reddit user shared an image of the survey on a Walmart Onn 4K streaming device.
The survey asks:
To what extent do you agree or disagree with the following: In general, I find the number of ads on the Google TV homescreen to be acceptable.
- Strongly agree
- Agree
- Neutral
- Disagree
- Strongly disagree
- No opinion
It’s unclear if Google is currently running this survey on a wider basis, but users will see a small pop-up in the bottom right corner of the screen when the survey is available.
Homescreen ads on TV platforms have been a polarizing topic for a long time. While Google TV originally only showed sponsored ads in the form of content recommendations for movies, TV shows, or other content that was consumable on your TV, the platform has since started showing more direct ads, often with auto-playing video, for physical items such as cars and restaurants, as well as video games that are not available on Google TV.
