Entertainment trends lead the way
In the entertainment sector, Stree 2 was the most searched movie of 2024, followed by films like Hanu-man and Kalki. Movies such as 12th Fail and Laapataa Ladies also attracted significant search interest, with their focus on social themes resonating with viewers.
On the television front, shows like Heeramandi and Mirzapur dominated the search charts. Meanwhile, international content also saw a rise in popularity, with Indian viewers flocking to shows like The Last of Us and K-dramas such as Queen of Tears and Marry my Husband.
In music, indie songs like Nadaaniyan and Husn emerged as favourites, while nostalgic Bollywood tracks like Ye tune kya kiya continued to engage listeners.
Memes and workplace humour capture attention
Memes continued to be a major part of India’s digital conversation in 2024. The Blue Grinch Knee Surgery meme gained viral status, along with lighter memes like the Hamster Meme and Very Demure, Very Mindful. Workplace humor also gained traction, with searches for Gen Z Boss and Gen Z leave work email highlighting the evolving professional landscape.
The Orange Peel Theory, a meme related to relationships, sparked widespread discussions, making it one of the year’s most searched topics. Additionally, the Throning Dating trend captured the attention of those interested in modern relationship dynamics.
Political engagement and public awareness
Political engagement remained high in 2024, especially during the Lok Sabha elections. The top trending “How To” search was “How to vote Lok Sabha”, as many looked for guidance on participating in the democratic process.
Air quality and health were also significant concerns, with searches for “AQI near me” and “excessive heat” reflecting public interest in environmental and personal well-being. The global Palestine conflict led to increased searches for “All Eyes on Rafah”, illustrating India’s engagement with international issues.
Sports frenzy remains strong
Cricket was once again a major focus for sports fans. Matches between India, England, and Bangladesh topped the list of trending matches, while other leagues like the Pro Kabaddi League and Indian Super League also attracted attention. Athletes like Vinesh Phogat, Hardik Pandya, and Shahshank Singh emerged as top trending personalities in the sports category.
Travel and culinary trends
Travel searches in 2024 saw a rise in interest for international destinations like Bali and Azerbaijan, while domestic travellers showed a preference for destinations such as Manali and Jaipur. Culinary searches were diverse, with people exploring both traditional Indian dishes like Mango Pickle and Ugadi Pachadi and international trends like the Pornstar Martini and Flat White.
