Google, Meta Attorneys Expect Demise of Maryland Digital Ad Tax

Attorneys representing tech giants Google and Facebook predicted Maryland’s courts would eventually strike down the state’s first-in-the-nation digital advertising tax as a violation of the federal Internet Tax Freedom Act—perhaps as early as October.

“We are optimistic that we will get to the right place through the Maryland court system as a result of the four cases moving forward,” said Stephen Kranz, Google LLC’s counsel in the litigation and a partner in the Washington office of McDermott Will & Emery. He spoke at a California Tax Foundation webinar Tuesday.
