Google confirms end date for long-standing URL shortener service in 2025

Must read

(MENAFN) google has officially confirmed the end date for its long-standing URL shortener service, goo.gl, which has been a staple for many users over the years. In a blog post published on Saturday, the company announced that the service will officially cease operations on August 25, 2025. After this date, any URLs that were shortened using goo.gl will no longer be accessible, rendering them completely inactive. Until then, users can continue to use these links as they normally would, with no immediate changes to their functionality.

In anticipation of this shutdown, Google will be rolling out a series of transitional changes to prepare users for the service’s discontinuation. Beginning in August of this year, when users click on goo.gl links, they will first encounter an interstitial warning page. This page will appear before redirecting users to their intended destination, serving as an early notification about the impending termination of the goo.gl service.

Additionally, starting August 23, 2024, an intermediate page will begin appearing for all goo.gl links. This page will provide users with a more specific warning that the links will soon become inactive. As the final shutdown date draws nearer, the prominence and visibility of this warning message will increase, ensuring that users are well-informed about the impending changes. Once August 25, 2025 arrives, attempts to access goo.gl links will result in a 404 error page, indicating that the requested content is no longer available. This final step will mark the complete deactivation of the goo.gl URL shortener service.
