Google and Microsoft continue with their restructuring by laying off more people
Google and Microsoft have continued with their restructuring process across teams as they look to increase their focus on AI in the near future.
The tech layoffs continue in 2024 with Google and Microsoft cutting up to 1,000 jobs from different divisions of their teams. According to latest reports, the Google Cloud business has handed over the pink slips to around 100 employees, while Microsoft has gone deeper into its decision by asking around 1,000 employees to exit the company. Both the companies are going through massive changes as they pivot to AI in their operations but even then any major layoff news gets the market concerned and same is the case this time as well.
Google Cloud Layoffs
The report from CNBC has pointed out that Google Cloud has cut down its sales and engineering teams as it looks to reduce its operating budget. The total count of people laid off this month has come to 100 and Google has been quoted saying that the layoffs are part of the focused approach on its business and investment in the critical businesses.
Google has already conducted multiple rounds of layoffs in 2024 across different divisions, which includes some of the engineers whose work is being sourced to Google branches in India and Mexico among others. Sundar Pichai had sounded out these changes in an internal memo recently. Pichai also mentioned that the layoffs will come down by the second half of 2024 but we’re yet to see his words come true.
Microsoft Sacks Thousands
Microsoft seems to have gone further into its restructuring process and reportedly laid off 1,000 employees from its Mixed reality team. These employees were part of the HoloLens 2 development, and are part of the broad plans set up by the company, as quoted by CNBC in its report.
