Google TV users will soon be able to do more with their smart home through their Google TV device, allowing them to control lights, thermostats and cameras from the largest screen in their home.
According to Google, the new updates coming to all Google TV devices, including the new Google TV Streamer, include a new home panel that allows users to control all compatible smart home devices. The new smart home feature includes new doorbell notifications that show users their camera feeds without pausing what they’re watching.
Users can also control devices with their voice and Google Assistant, the company says.
The updates coincide with the official release of the Google TV Streamer, Google’s apparent answer to the Apple TV 4K that brings faster, more premium version of the Chromecast. The device offering users access to more than 700,000 movies and shows through streaming apps like Netflix, Disney, Apple TV and others. The device also includes more than 800 free live TV channels.
Google has even managed to wedge its generative AI tool Gemini into the device, with it giving users full summaries, reviews and breakdowns of content to make it easier for users to find something to watch.
Google Joins the Art TV Trend with Latest Smart Home Update
In what is another growing trend, Google TV devices can be turned into artwork thanks to an improved Ambient screensaver that allows users to create AI-generated designs or use personal photos.
Another highlighted feature in Google TV is a new sports page in the For You tab, designed to help users find live and upcoming games, catch commentary and see highlights on YouTube. This appears aimed at the fragmented sports streaming landscape due to many competing streaming services now offering live sports.
In the same vein, Google TV will also include new overviews of top movies and shows using the company’s Gemini AI technology. This is designed to help users decide on what to watch, the company says.
Google says it is also adding an updated channel guide to Google TV Freeplay to help users find content to watch.
