Gemini homescreen redesign rolls out on Android

Must read

Google is now widely rolling out a redesign of the Gemini app on Android that greatly simplifies the homescreen.

The previous design had the “Gemini” or “Gemini Advanced” logo, a carousel of suggestions (which you could hide), and a “Chats & Gems” section showing your last three queries.

That has all been replaced by “Hello, [name]” and a chat bubble icon in the top-left corner to access history. The web app has been similarly updated to just a greeting.

Meanwhile, the text field previously had a large “Type, talk, or share a photo to Gemini Advanced” prompt with a centered microphone and camera pill flanked by the upload menu and Gemini Live.

All that is now housed in one line, like when you’re in a conversation. The ‘plus’ sign is still first with the prompt shortened to “Type, talk, or share a photo.” The mic/camera pill fits inside the oblong text field, while the Gemini Live waveform remains in the corner. There’s a nice animation when you tap to expand the field, which brings back the old UI.

Google first introduced this homescreen redesign for Android in late September and it’s now seeing wide availability across paid free Gemini accounts. We’re not seeing this on iOS just yet.

The simplicity of this design is somewhat reminiscent of  the Google Search homepage.
