The Galesburg City Council has given the OK to being part of a federal program to make railroad crossings safer.
The city will apply for a grant with the Federal Railroad Administration. That money would be used to close the Mulberry Street rail crossing and replace the South Street underpass with a new one that won’t have height restrictions.
“I enjoy working on projects that are going to help make our roads safe and help improve mobility in Galesburg, and help the residents,” said Aaron Gavin, Galesburg city engineer.
The project would take years to finish. The city must apply for the grant by next Thursday.
