Connected Nation is returning to Troup County to offer another series of free technology classes.

Connected Nation is a nonprofit that has partnered with the Troup-Harris Regional Library system to offer free technology classes. The classes were previously offered at the LaGrange Memorial Library in January. The group is returning to offer similar classes at the Hogansville Public Library in March.

Alek Argueta of Connected Nation said the nonprofit received a grant from AT&T to provide simple technology training to different communities all over the US. Georgia is one of the states that the group is focusing on, so they are hitting places all over the state including LaGrange and Hogansville.

The classes will be held on Tuesday, March 4, and Wednesday, March 5. The first day will cover computer basics starting at 10:30 a.m. and Internet Basics at 1 p.m. followed by Mobile Device Basics at 3 p.m. The second day will teach Zoom conferencing at 10:30 a.m. and Email Basics starting at 1 p.m. closing out the series with information on Internet Safety at 3 p.m.

The Mobile Basics class will help people learn how to better use their cell phones, tablets and other mobile devices.

“We just teach them how to do basic stuff, anywhere from sending text messages and merging calls,” Argueta said.

“In the Zoom conferencing class, that one will teach you how to use Zoom, how to set up your Zoom account and how to host Zoom calls,” Argueta said.

Argueta said they are ending with Internet Safety, which is probably the most important and something everyone could learn from.

“We’ll teach people how to stay safe online, how to prevent hackers from hacking their accounts and how to maintain security when online,” Argueta said. “I think that one really does benefit anybody and everybody. Because we could all use some tips on how to prevent hackers,” he said.

The classes are not targeted at seniors, the classes are for everyone, but it’s typically older folks who are attending and getting the most benefit, Argueta said.

Argueta said they teach the initial classes but they leave information with the libraries in the hope that they take charge and offer similar classes in the future.

The classes will be taught at the Hogansville Public Library at 310 Johnson Street in Hogansville.
