TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Foxconn awarded National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) Ph.D. student Lin Kuo-chun (林國鈞) the Hon Hai Technology Award for his contributions to iris anti-hacking technology on June 14.

According to an NSYSU press release on Monday (July 8), Lin said that compared to traditional password systems, biometric technology is not susceptible to loss and is difficult to replicate, per CNA. The iris is unique and is better for security, he added.

Lin said biometric recognition technology stores biometric codes in databases for comparison, which is not secure, per Liberty Times. The Ph.D. student explained that scholars had raised concerns 14 years ago about hackers using error correction code attacks, but no solutions had been proposed.

Under the guidance of his advisor, Professor Chen Yen-ming (陳彥銘), Lin said he dedicated himself to researching iris-based biometric password systems. Security bits can be increased from one to 100, enhancing the security factor by a hundredfold, and in ideal environments, it can exceed a thousandfold, preventing error correction attacks, he explained.

Chen commented Lin’s research results have achieved breakthroughs in the field of information security, making significant contributions to biometric identification and information security.

Lin’s research has secured two patents and has been published in two renowned journals, including IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing.
