MID-MICHIGAN (WNEM) -Four communities in mid-Michigan are receiving a total of more than $2.1 million in grant funding to work toward identifying lead service lines and their removal.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) made the announcement on Friday, July 26.

The funding is a part of a $9.7 million grant awarded to the state to help several communities upgrade their water infrastructure and protect their health and environment.

EGLE said the MI Clean Water Plan grants through the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF), Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF), and support from the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) aim to help communities upgrade aging infrastructure, ensure healthy drinking water, and protect Michigan’s environment.

The following communities in mid-Michigan have received the technical, managerial, and financial grants:

  • Carrollton Township: $600,000
  • Village of Mayville: $479,349
  • Village of St. Charles: $597,327
  • Village of Chesaning: $507,000

This grant funding is to be used for work in relation to verifying service lines at properties where lead is suspected but not confirmed or where service line material is unknown but likely contains lead, EGLE said.

According to EGLE, hydrovacing must take place to accomplish that task. Hydrovacing is a process where a piece of equipment uses high-pressure water to cut and liquefy soil while using a high-volume vacuum to remove the soil from the excavation.

EGLE said the project includes hydrovacing on either side of each curb stop and an in-building investigation to document service line materials. The project also includes the restoration of all hydrovaced locations to their original condition.
