Arkansas Sen. Bryan King (District 28) expresses his concerns about how the governor’s office and the Department of Corrections have selected Franklin County for a new 3,000-bed prison after a town hall on Nov. 7 in Charleston.
The Fort Smith Board of Directors is set to hold a study session to address several topics impacting the city, including water infrastructure updates, a couple of Supreme Court rulings and downtown development plans during its regularly scheduled Study Session at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Blue Lion.
The meeting will start with a review of the Board’s regular meeting schedule for 2025 to solidify next year’s calendar.
The Water Utilities Department will present a plan to replace and upgrade city water meters to Advanced Meter Infrastructure. This shift is expected to improve meter accuracy, streamline billing and support efficient water management. The session also will cover a proposed review of irrigation water rates.
Another focus of the study session will be the recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings that could affect local policy. The Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo decision limits federal agencies’ power to interpret laws without clear Congressional direction. Additionally, the City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Johnson ruling on public camping bans and homelessness policies will be examined.
Amanda Hager, the new executive director of Main Street Fort Smith, will provide the 2024 annual report during the study session and discuss plans for 2025.
