Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has called for increased government oversight of private technology companies, warning that artificial intelligence technologies could be exploited by terrorist groups to “harm innocent people.”
In an interview with BBC, Schmidt emphasized the potential dangers of AI falling into the hands of terrorist organizations or “rogue states.” He specifically cited concerns about countries like North Korea, Iran, and Russia potentially using these technologies to “create biological weapons.”

Drawing parallels to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, where hijackers took control of aircraft leading to numerous casualties in the United States, Schmidt expressed worry about similar scenarios involving AI technology.
“It’s really important that governments understand what we’re doing and keep their eyes on us,” Schmidt said, while also cautioning that excessive regulations could stifle innovation. His comments come at a time of increasing global debate over AI regulation and security.
Schmidt, who led Google during its period of explosive growth, predicted that AI technologies will largely be developed by private companies in the future. This prospect, he argued, makes government oversight crucial to prevent misuse of the technology.
The tech executive also addressed concerns about children’s use of AI-enabled smartphones, emphasizing the need for proper monitoring. He expressed support for campaigns and initiatives aimed at protecting children from “online dangers.”
