ALBANY – Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has informed Governor Kathy Hochul that the federal government plans to grant temporary drone flight restrictions over some of New York’s critical infrastructure sites.
The governor did not name the sites in a brief statement Thursday evening.
“This action is purely precautionary; there are no threats to these sites,” she said.
The action comes after areas of New York, including the Hudson Valley, have experienced numerous nighttime drone sightings in the last two months.
The governor said that action is in addition to the state-of-the-art drone detection system delivered to New York by the Biden-Harris Administration earlier this week.
“While we have not detected any public safety or national security threats, we will continue aggressively monitoring the situation as we call on Congress to pass legislation to give states and local law enforcement the authority and resources they need to manage this evolving technology,” Hochul said.
