Evian Championship announces major prize fund increase

Must read

The Amundi Evian Championship, the only major held in continental Europe across the men’s and women’s game, has increased its total prize fund for the 2024 renewal to $8 million – with the winner set to receive $1.2m.

Since its creation in 1994, The Evian Championship has consistently affirmed its ambition to promote the performance of women in sport and to support its development towards parity. This is the direction in which the tournament has long been moving in terms of prize money, thanks to the support of its Sponsors’ Club, which includes Amundi, Rolex, Danone and Evian; an initiative shared by all the world’s major women’s tournaments and supported by the LPGA for several years.

“This latest announcement from The Amundi Evian Championship illustrates its ongoing commitment and passion for empowering the world’s best professional golfers,” said LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan. “Since its inception 30 years ago, The Evian Championship has been a leader in advancing women’s golf and women’s sports on a global stage, providing a marquee platform for our athletes to inspire generations of young girls. We are grateful for this support of our athletes as this great championship continues to grow, delivering one of the most exciting weeks in women’s sports for fans around the world. We can’t wait to tee it up in July.”

“It’s a beautiful symbol for the tournament’s 30th anniversary to announce this significant increase in our prize money,” says Franck Riboud, Chairman of The Amundi Evian Championship. “Since our creation, our ambition has been to develop women’s sport and to give ever greater resources to the champions who represent it.

“Today, thanks to the support of the LPGA and Ladies European Tour, the involvement of our loyal Sponsors Club and the exposure provided by the international media, The Amundi Evian Championship is more than ever part of the very exclusive circle of major women’s golf events. It’s a source of immense pride for all those who have contributed and continue to contribute to its success.”

Since the championship’s major designation in 2013, the purse has now grown over 146%. The purse has increased by $3.5 million since 2021, with a $1 million winner’s share first achieved in 2022. In 2024, majors will now award at least $46.9 million, an over 100% increase in just three years.

The rise to $8 million means a prize money of $1.2 million for the winner, and another step towards parity in world sport.

This year’s Amundi Evian Championship is being staged from July 11-14 at the Evian Resort in France.
