Durham Plaza shopping center in South Plainfield eyed for redevelopment. What’s proposed?

Must read

SOUTH PLAINFIELD – A four-story, multifamily residential community, which would include affordable housing, has been proposed for a Durham Avenue shopping center.

Durham Plaza, LLC has applied to the Planning Board for preliminary and final major site plan approval to permit the development, a 95-unit community, at Durham Plaza, 110-136 Durham Ave.

The shopping center, which was built in 2005, is mostly vacant. At one time, it was home to Subway, Dunkin’ and other businesses.

The proposed project contains 19 affordable housing units, two of which will be very-low-income rental units, eight of which will be low-income, and nine of which will be moderate-income, according to documents filed with the borough.

The affordable units in the development will have a “veteran’s preference,” the documents say.

The application proposes 77 off-street garage parking spaces and 118 exterior off-street parking spaces. Associated landscaping, utilities, stormwater management, and amenities are also proposed.
