Dinkins family bids farewell to fireworks business after over two decades of bright skies

Must read

Anyone from James Island has probably heard of the Dinkins family.

Either from getting a car serviced by Dinkins Auto Service or purchasing fireworks from Big Joe’s.

After more than 20 years, the family is blasting off to a new stage of life.

Filled with bright lights, explosive love, and glowing excitement, just like the fireworks they have provided the community.

“Gonna take some time off. Gonna make him take some time off,” Owners Joe and Tracee Dinkins said.

A multi-decade chapter started as a way to make extra money.

“It helped put my kids through college was the main thing. Helped save… just bring some extra money in. Then it kind of grew from there,” Joe Dinkins said.

The Fourth of July holiday this year will be bittersweet, remembering the great times they’ve shared with James Islanders

“It’s kind of come full circle in that respect,” Tracee Dinkins said.

“We got third-generation families up here. The parents, the kids, and their kids have kids and they’re bringing them up here and that’s, that’s pretty neat to see,” Joe said.

“It’s fun,” Tracy added. “It’s just neat. And they share their memories and they talk about like, oh, you remember coming up here when I was so little?”

Their other business, Dinkins Auto Service, is not closing.

Big Joe’s will be open from noon to 10 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday and July 4 from 8 a.m. until all sold out.

The fireworks stand has buy-one-get-one-free deals for customers.
