Here’s what you might have missed last month on the Streetwise beat.
MANITOWOC – Here’s a look at the top stories folks read in January as they returned home or to the office after the long holiday season.
My most-read story was one I’d written a few months ago about Steven Avery and his attorney’s response to a criminal complaint launched against a former Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant who is under investigation on suspicion he mishandled department funds.
Perhaps that’s because last month, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals upheld a ruling denying his appeal to be released. Avery, convicted for the murder of Teresa Halbach in 2005, is serving a life sentence without a chance for parole. He’s now appealing to the State Supreme Court. Avery has since petitioned the state’s highest court to review the denial of his latest appeal.
Readers also tuned into my story about a former Manitowoc County supper club destroyed by fire Jan. 24. Firefighters put out the early morning blaze at the building on County K in the village of Menchalville. The building was a total loss and we don’t yet know the cause of the fire.
I also wrote some popular stories about positive things going on for Manitowoc-area businesses.
We learned family-owned John Deere dealership Eis Implement was sold to Riesterer & Schnell. New owners say they plan to expand opportunity for growth and innovation.
Manitowoc’s Skylight Wealth Management was given a top industry award, and Broadwind partner Konecranes gained a new U.S. Navy contract to build more cranes.
Readers also were interested in the new retro restaurant — Hot Daugs — coming soon to Manitowoc’s downtown.
And Tietz’s Piggly Wiggly gained another lakeshore grocery store when it purchased the former Rick’s Piggly Wiggly in Kiel.
