Developers want to build Aiken shopping center with Tractor Supply

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – A new shopping center and a loan for a new water treatment plant are on the line as the Aiken City Council meets Monday night.

The council will meet at 7 p.m. at Aiken City Hall, 111 Chesterfield St. South.

On the agenda for consideration is a plan for a mixed-use housing and commercial development.

Developers are asking the council to amend the concept plan for the development at Rutland Drive and Laurens Street near Aiken High School.

Developers want 11.4 acres zoned for businesses and 38 acres zoned for a residential neighborhood.

On the 11.4 acres, developers are hoping to build a 22,000-square-foot Tractor Supply store along with an 18,080-square-foot general office building, a 13,560-square-foot retail store and a 13,560-square-foot restaurant.

The residential neighborhood would include 59 single-family detached homes and 210 units of multifamily low-rise housing.

Also on the agenda is a proposal for annexation and a concept plan revision for a shopping center at Whiskey and Powderhouse roads.

The Junction shopping center is already under construction, and the revision would allow an additional 8,000-square-foot building housing a restaurant and a dental office.

Also on the agenda are the second reading and a public hearing of an ordinance to accept a $27 million state revolving fund loan for the Shaws Creek water treatment plant project.

The project is meant to replace the current plant across the road from the existing one on Highway 1, which provides more than 25% of the city’s drinking water.

The plant could cost around $70 million or more, much of which is coming from the federal and state governments.
