DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Decatur is making it easier for people to plan their trips if they are planning to use public transportation.

The city announced that the routes of the Decatur Public Transit system are now live on Google Maps, providing information on public transportation in real time. Officials said it’s part of the continuous effort by the city to modernize and improve public transportation.

“We are excited to pass another important milestone toward better serving our riders and our community,” said City Transportation Director Lacie Elzy. “Google Maps is one of the most widely used map applications so having Decatur Public Transit data available will only help us expand our reach and provide more real-time information.”

Google Maps can provide information such as route options between destinations, scheduled departure times and the price of the trip.

In addition to regular bus service, the city is also planning for Google Maps to be able to do the same for the upcoming microtransit service that launches in 2025. Microtransit operates in a similar fashion to rideshare services, officials said, utilizing smaller vehicles to pick passengers up and drop them off at assigned stops near their origin point or their destination.
