Dr. Juan De Urda

Dr. Juan De Urda from the Department of World Languages and Cultures at the State University of New York at Fredonia was named a finalist for the 2024 Paz Prize for Poetry.

The award was presented by The National Poetry Series, in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s (MDC) acclaimed Miami Book Fair.

Named in honor of the late Nobel Prize-winning poet, Octavio Paz, the award recognizes a previously unpublished book-length manuscript of poetry written in Spanish by a poet residing in the U.S.

The biennial prize was given for the first time in 2014 and has been awarded to prestigious Hispanic poets. Dr. De Urda submitted an unpublished poetry collection titled “Las manos no son simétricas” (Your hands are not symmetrical). The book is a poetic reflection on searching an enjoyable life when violence and death are always around us.
