Cozumel Civil Protection requested the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and Telmex for an exhaustive diagnosis of its infrastructure to evaluate the state of poles and wiring on the island.
This initiative seeks to accurately integrate the Cozumel risk atlas, a fundamental tool during hurricane season.
Rafael Tenorio Pizano, director of the Civil Protection of Cozumel, informed both companies about this new request.
The purpose is to know the level of risk for the population in the event of the impact of a hydrometeorological phenomenon, such as the recent Hurricane Beryl, and its implications for the safety of the inhabitants and the reconnection of essential services.
After Beryl passed, poles from both CFE and Telmex fell in several areas of the island.
A notable case occurred in the San Miguel 2 neighborhood, where the pole and wiring system collapsed along two main avenues, affecting more than 15 poles and obstructing the passage. Recovery work in this area lasted more than a week.
For this reason, Civil Protection seeks to identify the areas with the highest risk to maintain constant alert and ensure rapid attention. In addition, they intend to prevent future contingencies by requesting the replacement of poles in poor condition or flimsy.
The response from both entities, public and private, is still awaiting. They have shown a willingness to diagnose their infrastructure and evaluate the viability of changing or repairing the poles at risk.
