Costco’s new store in Covington opens Wednesday morning, and large crowds are expected to line up for a look at the big box giant’s much-anticipated first northshore location.
The store in the Nord du Lac shopping area on Pinnicale Parkway off Interstate 12 opens at 8 a.m.
Construction began earlier this year on the $46 million, 159,000-square-foot store and has been followed closely through social media and word of mouth. Store general manager David Hernandez said the social media following indicates a big opening day.
“We’re expecting a big crowd,” he said. “We’re staffed and ready to go.”Â
It’s not just shoppers looking forward to the new store. The company is expected to hire as many as 200 people and generate around $60 million in tax revenue over the next decade.
Costco, which operates more than 600 stores in the U.S., also has a location in Mid-City New Orleans. The company also opened or will open stores in Texas and Washington in August and will open stores in California and Oregon in October.
Costco requires shoppers to have store memberships, which vary in price.
