City of Gadsden receives federal grant for drainage infrastructure

GADSDEN, Ala. (WBRC) – Senator Katie Britt has secured $2.5 million for the city of Gadsden that will allow them to improve drainage issues and eliminate flooding.

Brett Johnson with the city of Gadsden says it’s about making sure people can safely drive through their community when it rains.

“When we have members of our congressional delegation like Senator Britt that goes to bat for the city of Gadsden, man that’s a windfall and wind behind our sails,” says Johnson.

With heavy flooding in and around the Flatwood community, city leaders hope to fix drainage issues sooner than later.

“Specifically in the south Gadsden community, they’ve not seen a whole lot of federal investment from infrastructure standpoint so it’s kind of a gamechanger in the sense that the residents, the businesses and the people who come to the high school everyday will be able to eventually see a little bit better scenario whenever there’s a storm-water situation, there’s always flooding,” says Johnson.

City leaders say they understand the concerns and frustration of neighbors when it comes to flooding in their community.

“Gadsden is an old city. We were founded in 1846 and the infrastructure can go all the way back to that year and that timeframe so, we are tackling these issues as quickly as we can,” says Johnson.

Brett Johnson says this drainage infrastructure project will begin as soon as the bill passes congress
