City council approves infrastructure changes in Thursday meeting

SAN ANTONIO – The future is looking bright for travel and infrastructure here in San Antonio.

City council members approved a highly anticipated Bike Network Plan (BNP), offering bikers safer means of travel.

“In 2022, San Antonio was ranked 16th in the nation for deadliest cities for cyclists,” said the city’s Transportation Director, Cat Hernandez.

The council voted to adopt the plan after a lengthy discussion. The BNP calls for over 600 miles in bike paths over the next few years.

“It doesn’t matter how you travel around town. The fact that 20,0000 San Antonians don’t even have access to a personal automobile, they shouldn’t be any less safe in this community than those who do,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg.

Councilmembers also approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the city of San Antonio and the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) to cut down delays on projects across the city.

Councilwoman Sikh Kaur leads that charge.

“I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of St. Mary’s Street, but that street was very challenging for many of our residents and a lot of the businesses we’ve lost in the last few years,” she explained.

The plan is meant to use accurate mapping of underground utilities to give crews a better idea of what they’re working with, keeping citizens and business owners happy.

Another change revealed in Thursday’s meeting was the opening of a new District 3 field office.

That facility is set to have a grand opening Friday morning, with a ribbon cutting that starts at 9:45 am.
