Cinema Series to present ‘Thelma’

Must read

June Squibb and Richard Roundtree star in “Thelma.”

The Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center continues with “Thelma,” starring June Squibb and Richard Roundtree. It will be screened on Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Inspired by a real-life experience of director Josh Margolin’s own grandmother, when 93-year-old Thelma Post (Squibb) gets duped by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson, she sets out on a treacherous quest across the city to reclaim what was taken from her.

With a rare 99% Rotten Tomatoes Score from the critics, “Thelma” is hailed as “a total delight.” Baltimore Magazine calls the film “genuinely one of the funniest films in a while.” AV Club calls it “a fun and funny twist on the action genre.” The Chicago Sun-Times says “at 94, screen veteran June Squibb gets her first leading role and carries the movie with style.” AARP Movies for Grownups says “thieves may have grabbed this grandma’s stash, but Thelma steals the audience’s hearts.” The Seattle Post says the film is “a perfect showcase for the delightfully wry Squibb, whose character constantly reminds us that you’re never too old to try something new.” Rated PG-13 for strong language, “Thelma” runs one hour, 37 minutes.

Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member.

The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank. In addition, Opera House programming is made possible by the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County.
