Cheers to the holiday shopping season

COEUR d’ALENE — Holiday shopping kicked off with plenty of cheers along Sherman Avenue on Saturday.

Two dozen downtown businesses participated in the annual Wine for the Holidays, which invited shoppers to taste wine and browse goods.

“You just never know what you’ll find downtown,” said Kelly Reeves from Coeur d’Alene. “That’s what makes shopping down here so fun.”

Participating businesses were packed, many picking out their first gifts of the season.

“To have this many people in the store before Thanksgiving and everything just makes my heart so full,” said Beth Rich, owner of Mix it Up Home and Gift.

Many businesses offered more than wine tasting. Live music, complimentary gift wrapping and pastries were among the offerings.

“We just like to be visible in the community,” said Amber Johnson, office manager at Tomlinson Sotheby’s International Realty.

Saturday was also a chance for business owners to connect with customers.

“I love meeting the locals, that’s my favorite part of events like this,” said Guy Barbera, owner of The Bear Cave.

Emily Boyd, executive director of the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association, was happy with the turnout.

“Wine for the Holidays is always a good kickoff for the holiday season, and to remind people to shop locally,” Boyd said.
