LAKEWOOD — The Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association’s six entries into Friday’s Section VI girls tennis championships all lost in the prequarterfinal round at the Lakewood YMCA.
Frewsburg’s Grace Kutschke and Brooke Golab were the only CCAA representative to win a set. The Bears’ pair won their first set 6-2 over Grand Island’s Natalie Kopf and Gianna Masker before losing 1-6, 4-6 en route to elimination.
Falconer’s doubles pair of Rachael Swanson and Elena Barie were defeated by Williamsville East’s Sophie Wang and Tabitha Swiatek 6-0, 6-0.
CCAA’s final doubles pair, Olean’s Lina Chauhdry and Natalie Snyder, lost to Williamsville East’s Jasmin Nagra and Elisa Prelewicz 6-0, 6-0.
In singles action, all three CCAA representatives lost in straight sets with Fredonia’s Nella Darrell-Sterbak winning the most games.
Darrell-Sterback was defeated by Williamsville North’s Sammy Rioux 6-4, 6-3.
Clarence’s Victoria Kiener beat Chautauqua Lake’s Eden Ludwig 6-1, 6-0.
Lancaster’s Julia Valkanova topped Falconer’s Myla Brainard 6-0, 6-1.
Williamsville South’s Syanne Tyson earned one of the four singles semifinals spots by defeating Lewiston-Porter’s Liliana Unversaw 6-1, 6-0 and Olmstead’s Gabrielle Pacifico 6-1, 6-0.
Kiener earned a semifinal spot by defeating Ludwig and Lancaster’s Carrie Kornacki 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Valkanova beat Williamsville South’s Mary Finn 6-0, 6-0 after beating Brainard to lock up the third semifinal spot.
The final semifinal spot went to Clarence’s Sofia Banifatemi, who topped Performing Arts’ Mikaela Eichorst 6-0, 6-0 and Rioux 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Orchard Park’s Amelia Pericak and Adrianna Roberts earned a semifinal spot with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hutch Tech’s Jennifer and Julieanna Ocampo-Hurley and a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kopf and Masker.
Clarence’s Gemma Hacker and Sahanna Varma beat City Honors’ Leah Kline and Isabel Gardner 6-0, 6-0 in the prequarterfinals and Nagra and Prelewicz 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
Wang and Swiatek followed up their defeat of Swanson and Barie with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Orchard Park’s Leah Banes and Mariella Pericak.
The final semifinal spot went to Amherst’s Anna Wheat and Ada Radomski, who beat Lewiston-Porter’s Makayla Farnham and Lily Baird 6-0, 6-0 before topping Orchard Park’s Ella Smith and Georgina Merry 6-0, 6-1.
Semifinal action will begin on four courts at 3 p.m. today. The top three singles players and all four doubles teams playing today will qualify for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships, which will take place Monday, Oct. 28 through Wednesday, Oct. 30 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing.
