Carrington infrastructure director Mags Mernagh is set to depart Manchester United.
Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’ arrival at the club, revamping both the training ground and Old Trafford has been a major issue on the agenda of Man United’s new co-owners.
In January, The Peoples Person mentioned that United were in the process of scoping out new sites to build a world-class training facility from the ground up.
Following years of neglect and decline, Carrington no longer holds the esteem it once did, prompting INEOS to consider golf courses as potential sites for a new training facility.
In May, further information on Ratcliffe’s plans for Carrington came to light. Among the changes that INEOS wanted to implement was the instalment of a new “pre-activation and player performance” zone to reduce injuries, bringing more natural light into the facility, and moving laundry facilities outside to ensure that football becomes the sole focus within the building.
Another major change would be the expansion of the actual office space within the building. This forms part of Ratcliffe’s desire to bring an end to the club’s work-from-home culture.
Unfortunately, the United minority shareholders’ ambitions to upgrade the training complex’s facilities appear to have suffered a setback.
The Daily Mail report that Carrington infrastructure director Mags Mernagh is set to leave United.
According to the report, Mernagh decided to depart on her own accord in a decision unrelated to INEOS’s move to slash 25% of the club’s workforce.
Mernagh oversaw the construction of a £10 million complex for the women’s and academy teams that was inaugurated last summer.
It was also mentioned that she played a pivotal role in overseeing the planning of the £50 million overhaul of the men’s first team facilities.
The construction, to be carried out by Foster and Partners, will involve upgrading the gym, recovery, nutrition, and wellness areas.
Should construction go according to plan, the new upgrades will be ready before the start of the 2025/26 season.
