Canada will look to secure one of the country’s greatest-ever soccer achievements when Les Rouges meet Uruguay in the third-place match of the 2024 Copa America on Saturday in Charlotte.
A third-place finish would see new coach Jesse Marsch deliver Canada’s only podium finish at a major competition. Previously, Les Rouges had never participated in the Copa America and they have only ever contested two FIFA World Cup tournaments, being eliminated in the group stage on both occasions.
They will meet a Uruguay side in chaos. Following the violent ending to Wednesday’s semifinal at this same venue, Uruguay’s buildup has been dominated by news of possible sanctions for players who entered into the stands and confronted supporters.

Canada are also waiting on news of one of their most important players, as the fitness of Alphonso Davies will go down to the wire. He suffered an ankle injury in the semifinal defeat to Argentina on Tuesday, and it’s unclear what his availability for this match will be.
Canada vs. Uruguay prediction, odds
- Moneyline lean:Â Canada (+475)
- Score prediction:Â Canada 2-1 Uruguay
- Result best bet:Â Canada double chance (+140)
With so many unknowns, it’s hard to say how this match will play out. While anything can (and probably will) happen in the buildup, there are a few assumptions we are forced to make to predict the outcome of the game.
First, it’s exceedingly likely that a number of Uruguayan players will face a suspension. While it’s unknown if FIFA will get involved to extend sanctions at the club level, it’s expected that the likes of Darwin Nunez, Ronald Araujo and Manuel Ugarte could be disciplined for their roles in the brawl on Wednesday.
Nunez has been an enigma in this tournament — he’s played extremely well to set himself and his teammates up for opportunities to score, but has been woeful at finishing off chances himself. However, the potential loss of Manuel Ugarte would be enormous, as he has performed at an extremely high level across the Copa America.
Canada, meanwhile, could be without Alphonso Davies, a massive blow, but Jesse Marsch has impressed at this competition with his tactical versatility and motivational fire. Backing an energized Canada at strong plus odds to achieve a result against a weary and possibly thin Uruguay is a smart choice.

Canada vs. Uruguay best bet
With yet another baffling officiating appointment, CONMEBOL have tabbed 34-year-old Alexis Herrera of Venezuela to take charge of his first match at this 2024 Copa America.
Herrera has taken charge of the occasional CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier over the years, with six total under his belt since 2020, plus two career Copa America matches (one in 2019 and one in 2021). He’s never been afraid to let the cards fly, issuing five or more cards in five out of those eight aforementioned games, plus one dismissal.
There will be plenty of needle in this match, with Canada looking for a historic result and Uruguay hoping to prove a point. This could be an overtly physical battle that could be further exacerbated by the relative inexperience of the man on the whistle.
