Buybuy BABY says goodbye to its retail locations and changes its brand to a digital-first mindset.
In the Friday announcement, the retail chain company said that “as we reflect on the past year at buybuy BABY—a period of trials, learning, and invaluable insights—we recognize the need for a strategic reset.”
“We’re excited to announce that buybuy BABY is evolving!” the company said on its website. “We’re transforming into a digital-first brand, focusing all our energy on providing an exceptional online shopping experience. This decision comes after listening closely to our incredible customers, and our valued partners. Their feedback has been invaluable in shaping this new chapter.”
Company filed for bankruptcy in 2023
The change to an online store comes a year after the retailer filed for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy on April 23, 2023, in the New Jersey Bankruptcy Court.
In 2007, Bed Bath & Beyond acquired buybuy BABY for $67 million, according to Reuters.
Buybuy BABY will close all its retail stores by the end of the year, the company said.
Starting Oct. 18, the baby and toddler retail store will be offering significant discounts as the company begins its closing transitions, buybuy BABY said.
Here is what you need to know about the buybuy BABY closure.

What should buybuy BABY customers know about this transition?
To make the transition as smooth as possible, the retailer plans to implement the following:
- Online: Buybuy BABY shoppers can go to buybuybaby.com to browse and shop for items.
- Registrants: They can still access their registry on buybuybaby.com. If you have a registry completion code, you can still use it in-store or online on applicable items, however in-store discounts will not combine.
- Furniture Orders: If you have a furniture order that is approaching, the buybuy BABY customer service team will be reaching out to discuss the details of your order.
- Gift Cards: Gift cards will be honored at buybuy BABY stores through Oct. 31 and online at buybuybaby.com after that date.

Other retailers making substantial changes
Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy and closed its stores in 2023, but the department store made the switch to sell products online after Overstock acquired the store’s intellectual property.
In June 2023, Overstock announced it completed the acquisition process, which includes the Bed Bath & Beyond brand, customer database, and website domain among other intellectual property.
Now the store will fulfil customers’ long-awaited dreams of coming back to a physical store.
The Container Store announced on Oct. 15 a strategic partnership that would include Bed Bath & Beyond items being sold at the specialty retail chain, the press release said.
In addition, Bed Bath & Beyond had more news to share. On Monday, the department store announced that it would be returning alongside another home décor retail chain
Entering a strategic partnership, the brands will collaborate to make Kirkland’s “Beyond’s exclusive brick-and-mortar operator and licensee for new, smaller format (up to 15k square feet) ‘neighborhood’ Bed Bath & Beyond locations nationwide”, the press release said.
Beyond will also invest $25 million in Kirkland’s, the release said.
