Four Fredonia High School graduates were presented with the Ricky Burgstrom Music and Bowling Scholarship last month at ceremonies.

“This scholarship has grown over the last three years in the number of honorees and value of the scholarships,” said Rick Burgstrom, who presented the honors with his wife, Brenda. “Through the generosity of Ricky’s friends, family, and the Remember Ricky celebration, it will continue to increase. We hope that you will encourage any future graduates to take a few minutes to apply in the future.

“Our son, Ricky, was a typical student complaining about school but always ready, prepared and on time for class. Ricky was a lifelong learner but took pride in being diverse and open to a challenge. He was an honors student that completed the 3-1-3 program at Fredonia State University and was a candidate for August graduation at Canisius College with his MBA. Ricky was motivated to work part time at Rite Aid, being a licensed Real Estate Agent and most importantly starting his own business ‘Burger Kicks.’ Burger Kicks was a successful business that introduced Ricky to the ‘Sneakers Community.’ Ricky prided himself on friendships. He saw the good in everyone and developed a vast network of contacts throughout the United States and the World. The selection committee was asked to identify individuals that went beyond being a high school student. We looked for student learners that displayed ‘Leadership through example.’ “

Those receiving the award included: Miriam LaBarr, Ava Hartung, Jack Pietro and Simon J. Price. Each applicant was asked to write a short essay explaining how they exhibit the criteria of a modest, friendly, uplifting, and welcoming nature.

All applicants spoke about their experiences in the many clubs, organizations, and sports at high school. Most wrote about work experiences and family endeavors. All four, the Burgstroms said, are a great reflection of the quality of this graduating class.

LaBarr participated in band, Jazz Band, and represented Fredonia at the NYSSMA competition including All-State. An accomplished musician performing on the clarinet, bassoon, and saxophone. She further participated in Unified Bowling for three years.

Hartung participated in Band and Jazz Band, and represented Fredonia at NYSSMA competition. An accomplished musician performing on the French Horn. She further participated in Chorus (4 years), Select Chorus (4 years) and FHS Musicals. She furthered her music education in the Advance Music Performance Program for French Horn and Voice.

Pietro participated in Orchestra and performed on the cello in NYSSMA, Chautauqua County Music Teacher Association (CCMTA), Advance Music Performance (AMP), Musical Pitt and with his church choir. Pietro’s essay and recommendation tell of an individual who looked at the outcome for those around him. He quoted an unknown author, “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”

Price participated in sports throughout high school and was involved in the Youth Bowling Program at Lucky Lanes for nine years. He participated in the Pepsi Challenge and Youth Sectional Competition.

“I hope that each graduating student will take a few minutes today to express to their parents and other guiding adults a thank you for assisting them in achieving this milestone in their education,” Burgstrom said. “To the parents and significant adults, spend a few minutes expressing to your son or daughter the pride you have for their accomplishment and continue to be part of their future. They will soon be leaving your home. We hope that you will take the time to communicate and grow your role in their future. Do not have any regrets. Make sure that your relationship evolves so that the transition to the future includes the entire family.”
