Best golf bets and expert advice for the Solheim Cup

Must read

The USA will be hoping to end Europe’s stranglehold on the Solheim Cup when the 19th edition of the biennial golf tournament for professional women begins on Friday.

Europe won the 2019 and 2021 editions before securing a dramatic 14-14 tie at Finca Cortesin, Malaga, Andalusia last year to retain the trophy, extending what has been a dominant run for them.

Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia will stage the 2024 tournament and a strong-looking US outfit will be hoping home advantage can see them over the line.

  • Leona Maguire top European points scorer @ 13/2

Stars and Stripes to stop the rot

It has been a barren spell for the US over the last three Solheim Cups but they look to have a strong chance of taking the trophy from Europe’s grasp in Virginia.

Captain Stacy Lewis has assembled a solid 12-player team spearheaded by the leading two players in the world, reigning Chevron Championship winner Nelly Korda (1) and two-time Major champion Lilia Vu (2).

Across this US team, they have won a combined 10 LPGA Tour titles in 2024 (Korda accounting for six of those) and that is a substantial advantage on Team Europe, who have just two players to have tasted success this year.

This American outfit are playing better and more consistent golf than their European counterparts and it would be a huge surprise should the hosts not win back the trophy.

Allisen Corpuz top USA points scorer @ 17/2

There is plenty of individual talent in this US team, but being able to play well in fourballs and foursomes is crucial and one player that fits the bill is 2023 US Women’s Open champion Allisen Corpuz.

Ranked second in driving accuracy and 11th in greens in regulation on the LPGA Tour this season, the 26-year-old is one of the steadiest players in the world and that consistency from tee-to-green makes her a great partner.

Corpuz was undefeated in foursomes and fourballs in the last Solheim Cup, taking 2.5 points from three matches, and there is a strong chance she will play every session this year.

Leona Maguire top European points scorer @ 13/2

Europe need their star players to show up if they are to stand any chance of winning and one player that has thrived in this event is Leona Maguire, who has an incredible winning percentage of 75 from two Solheim Cups.

The Irish ace claimed 4.5 points from five matches on her rookie appearance in 2021 before contributing three points from five games in 2023.

Maguire will be one of captain Suzann Pettersen’s most trusted players in Virginia and the 29-year-old will likely be sent out for all five sessions, thus increasing her chances of racking up the most points for Europe.
